Preparing a motorbike or bicycle for the journey
A bike that is prepared well travels well, and a few jobs before collection make a real difference over a long road journey across Europe.
Motorbikes. Drain the fuel tank as far as you safely can, and run the engine dry where practical, because fuel and other flammable or pressurised items cannot travel on the run. If we ask, disconnect or remove the battery and pack it separately. Give the bike a clean so any existing marks are visible, fold the mirrors in, and pad the tank, frame, levers and exhaust where they could rub. Photograph the bike from several angles before it is collected so its condition is recorded from the start.
Bicycles. Drop the saddle, turn the handlebars in line with the frame and, where you can, remove the pedals. This protects the bike and shrinks its measured volume, and since the rate is per cubic metre, a smaller, tidier bike quotes lower. Wrap the frame tubes, chainset and any carbon parts in padding, and either deflate the tyres slightly or leave them as your shop advises.
For both, secure or remove loose accessories: lights, computers, panniers, bottle cages and quick-release wheels. Bag small fittings, label them, and keep them with the bike. The outbound journey leaves the UK, so the usual personal-effects rules apply to a bike exactly as they do to your boxes. You upload three things to your secure online account: a passport or ID, an inventory of goods that lists the bicycle or motorbike, and proof of residence.
